A Grandson on His Shoulders and a King Who Couldn’t Stay Still
Outside the grand stone entrance, the formal gathering had already begun to loosen. King Charles stood at the centre in his gold-embroidered ceremonial jacket, medals gleaming in the daylight—and perched happily on his shoulders was young Prince Louis, dressed in a miniature white naval uniform, both hands clutching the King’s hat as if it were the best seat in the kingdom.
Louis wriggled with delight. He bounced a little, adjusted the cap, peeked over Charles’s head, and grinned at the crowd like a boy who knew exactly how lucky he was. Charles held his grandson’s legs securely, his own expression a mixture of concentration and unmistakable amusement.

Then the King decided the moment needed more.
With Louis still on his shoulders, Charles began a small, deliberately comic dance—a few exaggerated steps, a playful sway, a humorous turn that made the gold braid on his jacket flash. It was not a formal reel or anything resembling protocol. It was a grandfather showing off for a child, and the child loved it. Louis laughed out loud, bouncing in time, one hand still gripping the naval cap as if he might take flight.
The reaction was instant.
Prince William, standing just behind in green military dress, broke into a wide smile. Catherine, elegant in cream lace and a navy hat, laughed openly, one hand rising as if she could hardly believe what she was seeing. Around them, guests, officials, and family members burst into applause and laughter. The polished stone steps, the columns, the formal attire—all of it suddenly felt secondary to the simple, joyful sight of a king dancing with a little boy on his shoulders.

Louis played along without a hint of shyness. He waved, he wriggled, he leaned forward to look at faces in the crowd, completely at ease in his elevated throne. Charles kept the steps coming, careful not to jostle his grandson too much, but committed enough to the joke that the laughter only grew louder.
For a few bright minutes the official atmosphere dissolved. No one was thinking about ceremony. They were watching a grandfather and a small boy turn a formal arrival into something warm, silly, and unforgettable.
When Charles finally slowed, still holding Louis securely, the applause continued. Catherine wiped at the corner of her eye, still smiling. William shook his head with fond disbelief. Louis, still perched high, looked thoroughly pleased with himself.

The grand entrance remained as imposing as ever. The uniforms and medals still shone. But the image that stayed with everyone present was simpler and far more human: a king dancing a humorous little jig with his grandson on his shoulders, and a whole gathering laughing until they could hardly stand still.
